Behind The Veil

“And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah,” Luke 9:29-30 ESV

Reflection: what happens after we “die”?

It is interesting that, even with all the human progress in science, technology, medicine, etc, the average life span of a human being has not changed much. Actually, has gone backwards in some countries the past couple of decades. But even with the longest living individuals, we are astill talking only around 110 years or so. Looking at any other human endeavor, this is one that humans have not conquered. And it certainly is not from lack of trying, or even funding. So whether you are rich or poor, everyone has to deal with the inevitable question,

what happens after death?

Through several documented stories, the Bible teaches about people being raised from the dead, even long after death. And there are countless stories of people who have been pronounced dead, and come back to life telling about their experiences. There are also people who claim they are regularly “taken to heaven”, getting a glimpse of the heavenly existence. It is absolutely fascinating to hear those accounts. But what thoughts have you made about life after death?

In today’s verses, we have another account of life after death. The veil between the physical and the heavenly realms are lifted for a moment. This story is sometimes referred to as the transfiguration. Why? Jesus has taken a few disciples with him up to a mountain top to pray. “And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered”. He literally changed his appearance, his face changed. And, on top of that, “his clothing became dazzling white”.

Can you imagine watching this happen? It must have been totally surreal; possibly frightening. Most likely they saw the same appearance as after he rose from the dead. You might recall that his appearance changed after he rose, as they didn’t recognize him at first. And as if that was not enough, Jesus appeared with two others that had “died”; Moses and Elijah. They were all talking together.

Now, Luke is the only one that wrote down what they actually talked about. It says “who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.” Luke 9:31 ESV. They were talking about the future, about Jesus suffering and death (his “departure”) that was to happen in Jerusalem. Amazing. Clearly they were not lying in a grave somewhere.

If we follow Christ as the way, we are promised the truth and the life. Eternal life. He also lifted the veil for us, so that we got a glimpse of the eternal. We don’t have to fear death in Christ, as it is only our transition to immortality, Paul wrote “When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”” 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 ESV.
