How Much?

“and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:19 ESV

Reflection: how much of the fullness of God are you satisfied with?

Don’t you have a feeling that there is a lot more? That we have only scratched the surface of the knowledge of the love of Christ, as Paul prays for the believers in Ephesus that they “may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Ephesians 3:18-19 ESV.

To be filled with the fullness of God.

Who doesn’t want that? Sounds amazing, right? Sounds like something every believer would want. But what is it? What is the fullness of God? Paul eludes to it in the beginning of the focus verse, since he says “that you…”. He says what enables the fullness of God is “to know the love of Christ”. Sounds too simple. But, actually, he says that it “surpasses knowledge”. We can find many references in scripture to the DEMONSTRATED love of Christ. If we were to create a few highlights of His love, it would include the following.

By His love, He created all. By His love, He emptied Himself, and came into this world in the likeness of man, as the Son of Man. By His love, He overcame the world as a servant. By His love, He freely gave His life as an atonement for our sin, establishing a new, everlasting covenant in His blood. By His love, He conquered death. And by His love, all power in heaven and on earth has been given Him. And by His love, He reigns forever.

What love is this? It is the truth, the way, the life.

David captured what Paul talked about here, in Psalm 23, perhaps good to read today if you have time. It is endless, beyond comprehension. So the question is not the source. Perhaps the real question is, how much of the fullness of God do you really want? How much is enough for you?
