The Music Of God

“I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.” Psalm‬ ‭104‬:‭33‬-‭34‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Reflection: what around you do you give God honor and glory for?

There is something deeply satisfying about studying nature, and the natural order of everything around us. To try to understand how it actually works, where everything just seems to know what to do from its very beginning to its end. How all of nature plays as a massive score of music together, from the smallest to the largest instrument playing tunes that are all in harmony. And just like we know how carefully a score of music for an orchestra has been planned to sound right, so we can see the same careful planning of the “music of nature”. How God has carefully written the score of music of all creation.

Even in our lives, we can see the hand of God planning and orchestrating events that happen just in the right time. The music of God. In psalm 104, we see David observation and recognition of God’s work. “He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them. You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth. You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches. From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭104‬:‭5‬-‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As he meditated on what he observed all around him, seeing God in creation and how everything just played in concert, it gave him deep joy. “May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.” Psalm‬ ‭104‬:‭34‬ ‭ESV‬‬. And notice that in his joy, he gave glory back to God. “O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works, who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke!” Psalm‬ ‭104‬:‭24‬, ‭31‬-‭32‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Unfortunately, there are many who do not recognize God in what is so easy to see all around us. Even worse, some try to kill and destroy what God has created. Think of all the killing the unborn, the attempts to change genders, modifying plants and animals through genetics, poisoning the air, water and soil; even changing the weather. It all seems like attempts to mock God our creator. But in the end God will not be mocked. He is the creator of all, and will restore what He created. That day is coming, so we say and declare with David. “Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! Bless the Lord, O my soul! Praise the Lord!” Psalm‬ ‭104‬:‭35‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Take some time today to observe and meditate on “the music of God” all around us. It is an amazing ongoing concert. “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord.” Psalm‬ ‭104‬:‭33‬-‭34‬ ‭ESV‬‬
