Waiting For The King

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;” Psalm 130:5 ESV

Reflection: what are you doing while you wait for the risen Lord?

During the Second World War, many had to go into hiding in fear of the enemy. Some, because of their ethnicity or religious beliefs, remained in hiding or on the run throughout the war.  They were waiting for someone to come, to liberate them from this enemy. As time went on, and the liberation seemed to delay, some brave people started rising up against the enemy, unwilling to just sit still and wait. They risked their lives, but did heroic work to advance the freedom, to prepare the way for the final liberation. In a way, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are all in this situation where an enemy has taken our land. We are waiting for the King of kings to come, to liberate us. We don’t know exactly when, or how that will happen.

The disciples were in hiding after Jesus had been captured, horrifically crucified and put to death. The women had also watched the Lord being buried in a new tomb, and the stone rolled in place. What happened to all the promises, the hope of the kingdom of God? It seemed like the enemy had taken over and won, and the disciples needed to regroup. To figure out what it all meant and what to do next. How long should they remain in hiding? And then, should they just try to return to Galilee and their old lives? Would they even be able to do that? At this point, we know that they didn’t understand what Jesus had told them, that first he would die at the hands of the enemy. But that this was HIS plan, and that on the third day, he would victoriously rise again.

All true followers of Christ are waiting for his return. And when we look at all the evil around us, it can be tempting to go into or stay in hiding. To keep our beliefs to ourselves. To be a Christian at church and in our own house where it is safe. Not speak up, not to let anyone that is associated with the enemy know that we are sons and daughters of the King of kings. But that is not what he told us to do while we wait for him. We are to come out of our hiding places. To be bold, and proclaim his victory. As the boldness of the many that have gone before us, so that we could receive the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And someday, he will redeem us, his inheritance, his Israel.

Let’s meditate on Psalm 130 today, this day of waiting for the revealing of the risen Christ, our King.

“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.”Psalm 130:1-8 ESV
